Abu Dhabi, UAE, 3rd August 2008: East meets West this November at ‘Adrenaline Sports Live!’ with the announcement that Dragon Boating will be on display and open to public participation in Abu Dhabi for the first time.
‘Adrenaline Sports Live!’ will be bringing dragon boat racing, one of
the world's fastest-growing team water sports, to Abu Dhabi’s creek
during the 13th to 15th November.
Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, dragon boats are 40
feet long, wafer-thin watercraft. They are painted to resemble dragons
and feature a carved dragon head at the bow. Teams of up to 20 people
paddle in unison, to the marshalling beat of an on-board drummer.
“The Abu Dhabi National Dragon Boat Cup will have something for
everyone. Dragon boating offers an opportunity for athletes to train
and compete at a high level but it is also a very popular team building
activity for those who wish to enjoy the fun and camaraderie of a
novice competition. We have chosen to run this premiere dragon boat
event along side the Adrenaline Sports Festival to maximize the
opportunities for our participants to witness and participate in a
variety of thrilling activities besides dragon boating. This event is
open to everyone!” commented Jason McKenzie of Dragon Boats Alive
“It’s not rowing or paddling like you would in a canoe,” said CMPi
UAE’s Group Director, Chris Fountain. “It’s a different stroke, timed
to the pounding of the drummer. You have to get that paddle in and out
of the water quick to realize the speeds that dragon boats can achieve.”
Entry to The Abu Dhabi National Dragon Boat Cup, sponsored by the
Shangri La Qaryat Al Beri, is open to everyone, and ‘Adrenaline Sports
Live!’ is encouraging businesses and social groups to enter teams. For
those younger, more youthful types the Dragon Boat Cup organizers are
also holding a Schools and University Cup, open to all schools,
colleges and Universities throughout the UAE.
“It’s the best team-building exercise,” added Fountain. “You have to
keep your focus and keep in sync. Once you’re all paddling in unison
you’ll see why they’re named dragon boats. You’ll fly through the
water.”
Dragon boating is suitable for everyone, as you do not need any
particular skill sets or levels of fitness to join in, just a desire to
have fun. Each team will receive two one hour training sessions prior
to the dragon boat festival where participants will be taught the basic
skills.
